HELL-BORN
The Call of Megiddo
Conquer Records

It seems Satan himself has created another Polish legion to help fight for the dark side, crushing christianity, bringing fear to people's lives and thrashing their way through an eternal battlefield. This legion of the devil is collectively known as HELL-BORN and the battle they produce is finely packaged in eight songs of straightforward, in your face, no pussy footing around thrash. By that I mean nothing too technical or experimental, but this is an album born of the new breed of thrash, where elements of both black and death metal join forces to create a certain grimness to the unholy thrashing sounds of HELL-BORN.  In this album's case I do keep wanting to hear a bit more aggression and speed here and there but then it wouldn't really be thrash would it? Maybe it just needs something to give it a bit more 'oommpphh.' But I am just being picky and really as far as thrash goes HELL-BORN have created an album well worth hearing.

IMMEMORIAL
Monologue
Conquer Records

To classify an album such as IMMEMORIAL's 'Monologue' into a specific style of metal is of course limiting and does not really do justice to the array of sounds that the album has to offer. It is technical death, yet it is quite melodic in parts, the vocals span both death and black metal, there is a hint of thrash and that is just one song! This band has always had a female on vocals, not that you can tell, and of course this leads to the obvious Arch Enemy, Sinister comparisons, not that I am comparing them it is just that until females doing death vocals becomes a more common practice these comparisons are bound to emerge. Perhaps Immemorial will help to break the stigma associated with having a metal front woman, perhaps I am continuing to enforce it by even mentioning the 'f' word at all. But regardless of this IMMEMORIAL have put together a diverse and interesting album of complexities in sound. So keep you mind open and enjoy.

ENAMORED
A Stolen Season
www.angelfire.com/pa4/enamored

ENAMORED's 'A Stolen Season' is one of those albums you can't help wondering about. What would it sound like with a better recording? Could these guys become a mighty force to be reckoned with in albums to come? And why are there at least three metal heads in their family and only one in mine? Daniel, Jonathan and Jeremiah Martnick are three brothers that make up the American black metal band ENAMORED (Not to be confused with the christian hardcore band of the same name which I had the miss fortune of stumbling across on the net while looking for info) and 'A Stolen Season' is their debut, self financed album. The writing is in the style of Opeth, the feeling of the recording more reminiscent of Nocturnal Wind’s 'Everlasting Fall' album. An interesting feature of this CD is the prominent bass lines which course throughout the songs, giving a unique sound which is hard to come by in these days of over crowded genres of metal. ENAMORED is a band well worth keeping an eye on for the future.

MESS AGE
Self Convicted
Conquer Records

Band names can be misleading; often names dictate what you expect a band to sound like. For me the name MESS AGE brought connotations of some Nu-metal/rap-core group. Fortunately there really is nothing in a name and MESS AGE's debut album 'Self Convicted' is a pleasing mixture of thrash and death metal with a bit of melody made even more pleasing because of the fact that there is not even a hint of the afore mentioned assumptions. These Polish thrashers have produced an album that is in keeping with the quality we have come to expect from anything that comes out of that country of late. Interestingly Nergal from Behemoth does additional vocals on the song 'Kill the Falsehood.'

SHADEWORKS
Sooty Limbs

Shadeworks is the creation of Nicolas Arnaud. This talented guy from Belgium is the sole song writter and player, apart from a guest female vocalist, on this demo entitled Sooty Limbs. Containing four very diverse sounding tracks, this demo certainly gives a taste of what Shadeworks could become. Track one 'Sooty Limbs' reminds me heavilty of mid to recent Katatonia with its gentle male vocals and melodic riffs along with the occasional growl. However the female vocals and a quiet interlude of keyboards and whispers steer it away from this. Track two 'Blind Healing' start off heavily before the keyboards and a completely different style of vocals to the previous song, cut in. This track reminds me of Nicodemus, with similar drumming and vocal effects. This track has an 'electro' feel to it, as does the begining of the third track 'Terra'. Then it changes completely again. The guitar work sounds really good but would probably benefit if it was a bit more varied. Track four 'Silky Birds' is a slower, doomier song than the rest. Sooty Limbs contains a combination of different music styles which seem to be being experimented with. Once Shadeworks has found its true direction I believe it with be a much stronger project.

AWAKENING
An Eves Nightmare

Perth band Awakening have created an album that is both interesting and unique. An Eves Nightmare contains 12 tracks and has a kind of evil amusement park feel behind it. When listening to this CD you really just have to take it for what it is, even if you are not quite sure what An Eves Nightmare is supposed to be. It is definatelty stretching the limits to classify this synth laden recording as metal, but I also do not feel that Awakening are trying to pass this album off as something it is not. The vast majority of the vocals are clean, the songs are fairly short and the guitar is rarely distorted. There is something  underlyingly sinister about the whole album, like it could be the soundtrack to some parallel, twisted universe, taking the listener to some strange land. The cover art only serves to enforce this atmosphere. For what it is, this album has quite a few good tracks which really do achieve a strong atmosphere and track nine is fairly heavy sounding. But there are also a couple of songs on the album which are a little off puting such as 'Resurrect.' The first and last tracks are good from any perspective, be it metal or not. However... If you like your metal heavy and/or fast then this is not the release for you. For those wanting some experimental, aventgarde stuff then check this album out.

KULT OV AZAZEL-
Triumph of Fire
Arctic Music

Its taken me a few years to really get into American black metal and my view has totally taken a turn for their are some amazing bands like Thy Infernal, Fog and Judas Iscariot leading the way for a strong new scene. Kult ov Azazel are definatley strong contenders. Triumph of Fire isn't anything really new or different, which is one thing I like about it. It is chaotic, fast black metal in the vein of old Dark Funeral and Setherial. Kult ov Azazel have stripped down to the bare but brutal elements of black metal and executed an album full of hymns in the hounour of satan himself. Triumph of Fire has a strong, consistent dark undertone which creates a certain atmosphere through out the recording. A strong point of American black metal is the way they combine it with death metal, this is what Kult ov Azazel have done with their sound. Triumph of Fire isn't a release that is trying to change a certain sound, just enforce it.

COMPOS MENTIS-
Quadrology of Sorrow
Independent

Compos Mentis has already recieved strong feedback with their track Beyond Salvation on Dark Inspirations and it is well deserved. Quadrology of Sorrow mixes elements of Swedish melodic death metal with strong doom elements. This EP begins with the heavier side of Compos Mentis and progresses towards their doomier side. Each song is well structured and contains a strong emotional and sorrow filled tone, expressed by the music and enforced through the vocals. Being an EP, it is hard to determine the direction Compos Mentis is heading, however it can only lead to sorrow.

VIRGIN BLACK-
Sombre Romantic
Massacre Records

Sombre Romantic is the latest release from South Australian fivesome Virgin Black, and it is nothing short of amazing. Ten tracks of ingenious beauty flow together into an album so stunning and mesmerising it is almost addictive. What makes Sombre Romantic so unique, so brilliant, is the way that often there is only one or two instruments playing at one time. Sometimes the clear male vocals cascade through silence, or dramatic piano solely accompanies guitar solos. The simplisity of this adds to the emotion, creating music that is haunting, eerie, majestic and powerful. I swear this release is like some kind of drug, if you put this album on you will be sitting there stairing at the CD player entranced, unable to look away till the very end of the very last track. Then you will want to listen to it all over again. I am not going to describe any more of what this album sounds like because you have to hear it for yourself. I am sure that when you hear tracks like the unearthly 'Walk Without Limbs' and the three part "Museum of Iscariot,' you will, like me, be addicted to this beautiful album.

CHALICE-
An Illusion to the Temporary Real
Modern Invasion Music

This is the second full length release for South Australian gothic/doom/classical metalers Chalice. An Illusion to the Temporary Real shows maturity and growth from their previous releases Chronicles of Disphoria, and while it lacks a total stand out track like 'Solitary Waves,' this new album is a much stronger all round performance. An Illusion... contains what can be described as beautiful music, with just enough low doomy guitar riffs to keep it metal. Keyboards and flute  intertwine to create the haunting atmosphere while gushing melodies weave an enchanting spell on the listener. This type of music can often fall into the trap of becoming boring and monotomous, one of those CD's you put on when you can't get to sleep. But Chalice overcome this with uplifting vocals, tempo changes and interesting riffs. The flute is also a nice change from the violin. This is not a ground breaking release but it is definatly worthy of purchase, especially if you enjoyed Chronicles of Disphoria.

MY INSANITY-
Solar Child
Seasons of Mist

Solar Child is the latest release from German band My Insanity. Containing strangely accented clear vocals with the occasional semi growl, gentle keyboard interludes and rock riffs, this album is very hard to classify into any kind of genre. Its like German pop music mixed with a bit of doom, a bit of gothic rock and a bit of metal ofcourse. The lyrics are a little corny, but if you pay attention they actually start to make sense. This is a very interesting release, annoying at first and the songs are undoubtably catchy, but for some reason I really like it and thoroughly recommend it. Just don't expect to love it straight away, it takes a few listens to get used to the vocals and for the songs to sink in.

VINTERRIKET-
Promo 2001
Neodawn Productions

This promo contains a variety off Vinterriket's demo and 7" EP releases. Vinterriket has produced some amazingly strong, atmospheric music. Following the likes of late Burzu and Wongraven. Vinterriket has mastered the art of creating something that seems only timeless, uplifting but extremely dark at the same time. this promo contains a cover of Burzum's Der Tod Wuotans, which I have trouble telling apart from the original. Also listening to Vinterriket's latest release he seems to be moving into a different direction with the use of extremely distorted guitars, overlayed by the dominant atmospheres and clear but haunting vocals. This gives the music a stronger and darker outlook. Vinterriket shows a new dimention without ignoring the old rules, a great replacement for the defuct Burzum.

KORP-
Thorns of Centuries Unfold
VOD Records

This must be one of the hardest C.D's to review in the history of Swedish metal! What can one say about a band like KORP?This was the first time i'd heard this band and all i can say is that it would get  my vote as one of the most original sounding death metal albums to ever come out of Sweden. In a country that seems to have a knack for producing shitloads of At The Gates,In Flames,Dissection clones,KORP stand out like a bright star!Mixing all sorts of metal available(Except Nu-Metal! WOOHOO!),Korp manage to create a sound that is hard to put into words. As such, all i can suggest is to get this album straight away. You'd be a  fool to let something this unique slip you by!

MINDCOLLAPSE-
Vampire's Dawn
VOD Records

What is it with Sweden?Just when you think you've heard all the thrashing death you can handle, along comes Mindcollapse with the're latest offering "Vampires Dawn".What we get here is 10 tracks of metal in the classic vein of 80's Kreator,Slayer,Destruction etc.,but with all the attributes of a 90's Swedish thrash album. There is also plenty of melody in there aswell which gives it a distinct sound all of it's own! What i really love about this album is it's use of different vocal styles.Singer Johan for the most part uses his gravel throated sick-screams but on tracks like"Remaining Time",the clean vocals really make this song stand out as a fucking classic! To sum things up,i recommend this album to anyone with a passion for all things Swedish!

NICODEMUS
Tales of the Lovelorn and Necromantic
DarkThrone Music

Nicodemus hails from America and consists of but one man, Christopher David Morris. This debut album 'Tales of the Lovelorn and Necromantic' is quite haunting with some catchy parts in between making this a very interesting release. This is a very dark, gothic metal album with black metal influences, reminiscent of Cradle of Filth's 'Vempire' days. The male vocals consist of a good mix of clean and deep, and raspy growling and ofcourse there is the occasional female vocalisation as well. A release which has been described as having influences ranging from Cradle of Filth to Duran Duran is bound to be rather diverse and that is what 'Tales of the Lovelorn and Necromantic' is. It makes for a very worthy release from an obviously talented and directed man.

KEKAL
Embrace the Dead
THT Productions

Indonesian Extreme metallers Kekal's second release 'Embrace the Dead' is perhaps the best metal band from their region and is certainly making quite an impression on the rest of the world. 'Embrace the Dead' is an outstanding mixture of black, gothic and classic power metal with touches of death metal making it an appealing release for a wide audience. It contains unique lyrics and both male and female vocals. This album makes for great listening, garanteed to please.

PSYCROPTIC
The Isle of Disenchantment

Once an extreme metal act recieves a government grant to record an album in Australia you know its
going to be  something amazing. Psycroptic have recorded an album which can only be described as an Aussie classic. Not one bad  word has been said about their debut album, for there is not one aspect to complain about. A great mixture of brutal      technical death metal which utilises elements of black and power metal in most of the song structures. Comparisons with      Deeds of Flesh and Pagan (Aust) as far as time signatures are concerned yet still extremely original. Lyrics are another plus, each containing stories which seem to have hidden philosophies with great twists. This release is not to be over looked!

VANASHING POINT
Tangled in Dream
Metal Warriors

Progressive/power metal band from Melbourne has been worshipped overseas in Europe reaching number 1 in the top 10 from numerous metal programmes. They have already been incorporated in the Wakken  festival and sales figures have been high. Not to mention that the album has been recieving great press here in Australia. Tangled in Dream is one of those epic albums which leaves you in total awe with a smile on your face. The songs are timeless, sorrowful and beautiful. The album flows together and you find it hard to stop listening. Silvio Massard presents some of the best vocals I've heard in a power metal band since Edguy. Stand out tracks include the surreal 'Never Walk Away' and 'I Will Awake' which I'm sure will become Vanashing Point classics. This release has assured Vanashing Point as one of the leading groups in its genre.

FOREFATHER
The Fighting Man
Angelisc Enterprises

This two man band is yet another English success story. Forefather is Heathen metal at its finest. The combination of folk music, Black metal and Viking metal combine into one majestic package. The ambience and atmosphere of this album is powerful enough to carry you back in time to medievil England. While not the most technical of music the tracks contain just enough variance and detail to leave you wanting more. The whole album is brilliant, although "When Our England Died" does stand out as a perfect ending to an exceptional album.

LYCANTHIA
Myriad

This Cd contains 15 tracks of which every second one is an instrumental intalude. The music is haunting and beautiful and also quite saddeneing in places, especially 'My Darkness.' Lycanthia's brand of Gothic Doom Metal is made unique by its 3 vocal layerings and use of cello and flute. The recording is not brilliant but this does not take away from the atmosphere the album emitts. It has been selling well locally and we are proud to say that Dark Inspirations made it into the thankyou list. Its worth buying just to see that!

DESTROYER 666
Phoenix Rising
Season of Mist

Destroyer 666 have always been good but this album made them one of my favourite Australian bands. Their thrashy black metal songs are very catchy and great to sing along to, especially 'Lone Wolf Winter' and 'I am the War God.' This album makes war sound so intising that you have to resist the urge not to go out and start a battle of your own. Phoenix Rising has more presence than their previous albums, but like the others, the corny lyrics just make you want to sing! And the world needs more sing along metal bands. So buy this album and join the Aussie war cry!

VOLATILE
Get off the Road Ya Fuckin' Poofta  Bastard
Warhead Records

This is the funnyist album i have heard ever. Volatile are true Aussie drinkin', barbein', metal heads. The fun just never stops with this release. Tracks include "Eating Dead Sheila's cunt," "Gay Mardi Gras Massacre,""Pissed Cunt" Etc,Etc. My first listen ended up with me crying with laughter. I also enjoyed finding 'Wheres Wally' among hardcore fat porn, and beer drinking photos. This release is a must for all true beer drinking, grind lovin' Aussies.

ALCHEMIST
Organasm
Chatterbox Records

Alchemist are renowned for being one of Australia's most known and maybe biggest metal band. Organasm shows a progression from 'Spiratek' to a more stripped back sound, psychodelic could be a word for it. The boys are dropping a lot more acid these days and have mellowed while still remaining heavy. Organasm is a great journey, almost relaxing to listen to. This is a great release and highly reccomended to anyone who likes metal.

MISERY
Curses
Venomous Records

Queenslands metal gods' Misery are back with their 3rd full length release. They have amazingly kept the ultra deep guitar sound from  their 'Revel in Blasphemy' CD. Misery don't hold back with their brutal death metal, no pretty keyboards or female vocals here. Tracks like 'Swine' and 'Blood for Blood' will soon be Misery classics. Added bonus on the end of the CD is 2 recordings of the 'Insects and Septic Octopus' from the 'Necessary Evil' CD.

T666
Troops of Satan

A very generic sounding release from the boys of Bondi Beach, with 3 tracks of anti christian death metal. Listening to troops of Satan, Cannibal Corpse crossed my mind alot, with very Deicide-esque lyrics. But these similarities do these bands justice. This album is very tight sounding. Unfortunatly T666 don't play enough gigs and this EP only goes for 10 minutes, but worth every second I might add.

ENTER VI
Dreams
Agitate the System

I hate it when you get an Aussie release that looks like an American band and even spells words in the American way. Enter VI are a perfect example of this, wearing shit USA basketball shirts and spelling mum with an 'o.' This fucking pisses me off. I'm a proud Aussie, Australians kick ass!!!
Enter VI are a new thrash metal band from Sydney not that you could tell. However they are very talented and this CD is not bad. A more Australian approach would of made me proud of this release. sadly they want to be gay Americans. I advise that if you buy this CD you remove the cover and put a photo of you and your mates drinking your Aussie beer of choice as an alternate cover.

CHOKE
Smokin' Tail Pipe Action

After all  Choke CD's were told to be reclaimed and covers were ceased by the police They may be rare to find at the moment.Choke are Perth based and are Australia's solution to Pungent Stench. This EP shows a lot of the great Aussie humour with tracks like 'Bow Wow Chow' 'Getting Vizy with it' and 'Spicy Skin Free.' Very groovy death metal that 'the Stench' would be proud of.

PSYCHRIST
Embrace Rapture in Disgust

Dissident Records has released the '96 recording of Canberra's 'cult' black/death metal band Psychrist. The album once thought never to be released has been unchained from its slumber. This release trully shows the skills of an Aussie metal band.Complex songs with great riffs, time changes and structure throughout. Psychrist features Yuri Ward from bands like Armoured Angel(RIP) and Lord Kaos (newly recruted). A must for any Aussie metal fan.

ENFORCE
Campfire Night
Sonic Wave International

Another band hailing from Perth, Enforce have a strong Hypocrisy influence within the songs. This is well played melodic death metal with typical death metal track names-'As Death sets in' 'Brutal' and 'Slayer.' This is a very impressive release and shows a lot of potential for the future.

FRANKENBOK
Greetings and Salutations
Faultline Records

Melbourne based band Frankenbok are now signed to the reasonably new Faultline records run by D.W. Norton (superheit) . The vocals seem to be mixed with a damaged sound in conjunction with Mike Patton. Greetings and Salutations has a lot of Aussie humour and funny quotes. A great album to drink beer to.

ABRAMELIN
DeadSpeak
Thrust Records

One of the most antisipated Australian releases of the year. Its been 5 years since an Abramelin release and its been worth it. DeadSpeak shows a more melodic sound but is still ultra heavy. Song lyrics are still very graphic and in the horror movie vein. 'Pleasures and Waste' definatly stands out on the album and the computer artwork makes it an interesting release

ANATOMY
The Witches of Dathomir
Bleed Records

Another release which has been in the waiting since the Anatomy debut album 'Where Angels Die' released mid 90's. The Witches of Dathomir has been released on Marty's (vocalist) label Bleed Records. Anatomy features the infamous Hellcunt (G.O.T.H, Bestial Warlust) on drums. This is great atmospheric black metal from melbourne with little to no use of keyboards to create therir desired atmosphere. Songs do contain the Aussie 'KAOS' with shredding solo outbursts. A cover of Possessed's 'The Exorcist' is also on the album. Stand out tracks are 'Suncrusher' and 'Blood with Follow thee'
Supreme Australian darkness!

STARGAZER/INVOCATION
Split EP CD
Dies Irae Productions

STARGAZER - Harbringer
Stargazer are known for letting their songs mature for at least 3 years before releasing them. They play some great technical death metal on this split EP CD they have done with Invocation through Singapore's Dies Irae Productions. They have proved their cult status with these well structured songs which contain some unexpected time changes.

INVOCATION - H.A.S.T.U.R
From the other side of Australia from Stargazer, Queensland based technical death metal outfit Invocation have released a chalenging EP to Stargazer's.
